Alvaro Quiros, Inaki Alustiza, Carlos del Moral
Three small bets on three young promising Spanish golfers. Sticking with young players who should be able to cope with the heat of Madrid at this time of year. The reason for choosing these three is that they have won on the Peugeot tour in Spain this season.

Whilst he has not won since 2001 and turned 60 in April - these odds just seem too big about a man running into a bit of form - 13th and 6th in his last 2 events. But the key is his course form - despite his age he has been runner-up here in each of the last 2 years.

Jarmo Sandelin
Having had so many players come close but just falling short we have been looking at different angles for this week. This market looks particularly interesting this week as it takes out 18 of the top 20 players in the field.Sandelin has shown some glimpses of form this year and his putting is still very good. He returns to a course where he has never missed the cut has 2 top 10 finishes and was 1st and 3rd in this category in 2003 and 2000.

This seems a very big price for a player who reched the final in Dubai and then 2 weeks ago the final on grass in Birmigham before losing to world no 2 Sharapova in 3 sets.

A big price for a player who has finished 4th here in each of the last 2 years - indeed last years came on the back of 4 missed cuts.. He has made his last 3 cuts, had 2 top 5's in Central America earlier this year and is simply overpriced.

Ben Barham
Barham has a very solid long term record in this event with 2 top 5 finishes. He has been playing some very consistent golf on the Challenge tour and has a very good record in these "co-sanctioned" and smaller European tour events.

The young Italian player could easily emulate the young Spaniard who won last week in Holland. He has been playing consistently well on the main tour this season and this drop in class could see him go close at rewarding odds.

Todd Hamilton
This seems a very large price for last years British Open winner. His form has been solid if unspectacular this year and although he has missed his last 2 cuts he was 2nd going into the final day of the Byron Nelson. The main reason for the bet is the belief that the course will suit his play. Some players have likened Pinehurst to the Mirasol course used for the Honda - an event Hamilton won in 2004 and then was 2nd for scrambling this year when defending - an attribute of the game that will be key this week.

Billy Mayfair
We were saving Billy for next weeks US Open but sadly he has not qualified, therefore we felt it best if we tipped him for this weeks event on a course previously used for a US Open as they seem to bring out the best in his game. He is also having a very solid year as he lies 5th in the All-round ranking with numerous top 10's this season. He could well be a value choice as a lot of the top players' minds will be on next week.

Jerry Smith
Smith seems to have rediscovered his game this season with finishes of 3/8/29/43/24/2 in his last 6 starts. He put behind him the disappointment of losing out in the playoff on Sunday by comfortably winning the US Open sectional qualifier in Illinois yesterday. He does have course form - he was 54th here 2 years ago - one of only 2 cuts made that season - the other being at Vrginia Beach where earlier this year he led going into the final round. Interestingly some of his best PGA form was in Illinois also in the John Deere.

Well we said we thought he was "about to hit form" - but sadly he missed the cut in Wales - but today was jt winner of the Open Qualifier (tipped on SBI blog at 80/1!). This is sure to boost his game and on a course where his accurate play will be rewarded he has to be followed in a weak field.

This seems a very big price for a young golfer who has just finished in the top 10 in his last 2 events - both of which had much stronger fields. Whilst he has no course experience his straight driving should be well suited to the tight course.

Steve Lowery
Sometimes you keep looking at a player and keep finding evidence that they are about to produce a good finish and we think Lowery is just that man this week. Two weeks ago he had 2 solid opening rounds to go into the weekend in 5th, last week he was 7th in the All round rankings, each round was better than the last, and if it wasn't for putting it in the water twice at the par 3 14th on Saturday and running up a 7 he would have been much higher than 17th. His course form is fairly solid with a 5th in 2000 and he tied for the lead in 1996 after the 1st round. As he lacks a bit of bottle the bigger part of the bet should be on the top 5 finish.
