About us
SPORTS BETTING INDEX was founded in 2000 to help punters with all aspects of internet betting as the phenomenon of online gambling took off. Whilst the site has changed and developed over time the core beliefs remain the same – being independent, honest and open.
We regularly come out with new ideas to keep the site as fresh as we can including our Newsletter and our invaluable guide to Independent Bookmakers
The founder of the site is professional gambler Ian Richards – you can read his daily blog here and follow the ups and downs of his battle against the bookmakers.
Over the years Ian has put various bets and tips up on the site – he concentrates on golf and has had some huge successes in the past including in February 06 – it wasn’t quite the Transatlantic double as the European tour was in Australia but in the same week he tipped up Oberholser at 50/1 for the AT&T and Stadler at 125/1 for the Johnnie Walker – both won.
In June 08 we had the “Battle of Wounded Knee.” at the US Open even though Rocco Mediate didn’t actually win, he ended up being Ians' biggest ever financial winner – e/w at 500/1, top 10 40/1 and top US without Woods at 175/1. Many a Paddy Power account was shut after this one!
In August 2011 Ian was one of the only ones to recognise the potential of the pairing of Adam Scott and Tiger Woods ex caddie Steve Williams at Firestone and a good gamble was landed at 50/1.
He also has an uncanny knack of predicting big priced winners on the smaller golf tours – especially the Nationwide Tour where books often run for cover once Ian issues his tips.
These are just a few highlights and you can follow his golf betting tips on his daily blog exclusive to this site.
Ian doesn't just limit his bets to golf and has been known to come up with some cracking gambles on other events – notably SPOTY 2006 – in a weak year he went for Zara Phillips before and again during the World Championships at 66/1 and 80/1.
She went on to scoop the award just like her mother did 35 years before and just as predicted. Also in August 07 at the Athletics World Championship in the womens’ marathon he gave probably the strongest bet ever given out on SBI. Ndereba had run in 17 marathons, she was 6th in the first and then was on the podium in the next 16 winning 8 of them including on the course. Opening up at 9/1 we backed her e/w all the way down to near favouritism and she won comfortably.
Ian continued his good record in strong tips in marathon when he recommended a large bet on Wilson Kipsang who won the London marathon in April 2012 with ease.
