A frustrating day on the skiing front with those with early draws having the advantage in Bormio and the two I mentioned Jerman and Scheiber finishing 1st and 2nd! whilst Riesch was going well enough in the second run to get a podium finish before crashing out on the last section - but still got to be happy with the skiing so far where to small stakes profit has been over £1400. The skiing takes a bit of a break over the New Year and as there is no golf to look at til next week I think my betting bank will be having a rest - I aleady have one lined up for the African Open so things may well be pretty quiet til then so if I don't post again - a Happy and Profitable New Year all the best - Ian.
28 December 21.55
Tomorrows Womens slalom comes from Lienz and I would not be surprised to see young German Susanne Riesch continue to improve - in this years three events she has finished 4/4/3 and now has decent starting positions - the 16/1 at Hills is a fair price and I have had £20 plus £25 on the podium at 18/5.
28 December 12.02
Following the second training run from Bormio and Jerman and Scheiber have both gone well but neither win as often as they should but Kroell really caught my eye and seems to be returning to form - managed to get £18 win 49/1 and £62 podium 13/1 on Betfair - he has a really solid long term record at Bormio and that podium price is way too big
27 December 22.21
I've been looking most of the day at the mens Downhill from Bormio and as its one of the toughest hills of the season course form is all important so I think defending champion Christof Innerhofer is probably overpriced as he was also 9th in 2007 from an impossible draw - not many have price up yet but have taken 29/1 Betfair for £25 and £50 podium at a shade over 8/1
26 December 21.39
Hi all - hope you all had a good Christmas and it was nice to see the weather pay for it as well with York,Newcastle and Edinburgh all getting snow - happy days!! Back over the next few days with skiing bets if any arise and don't forget if you want to ask anything feel free to email info at sportsbettingindex.com
21 December 22.05
Sadly I couldn't finish the pre Christmas skiing on a high with Moelgg finishing shy of the podium in 4th. Anyway - most of my attention today has been spent looking at the antepost Oscar markets and in particular Best Picture and the film Avatar - basically I think the odds at William Hill are out of line at 9/1 - should probably be less than half that so have had £60
20 December 21.24
Well thats the end of the golf bets for the year and for once I am clear where I am going - Blaauw actually went very well and was worth the decent punt - at one stage in round one he was 2nd and if it wan't for Erlandsson streaking away I could have laid some back for a healthy profit. In the end he shot three rounds of 69 but the second round 75 put paid to any chance - eventually finishing 18th. I look forward to next seasons golf with renewed interest!!
I said the other week I couldn't get to grips with the Slalom or Giant Slalom on the skiing but after last weeks 33/1 success on the GS I have looked at tomorrows Slalom from Alta Badia and think there is a bit of value in Manfred Moelgg - he won two World Cup slaloms last season and has been going pretty well recently - managed to get £10 win 16/1 Stan James (thanks a bunch!) £15 15/1 Bet 365 and £50 podium 4/1 Bwin.
On another note - after getting behind early doors in December HBI has fired back with avengeance with winners at 10/1 and 14/1 just in time for Christmas
19 December 21.05
I am taking a somewhat different view to my betting at the moment trying to build a portfolio of bets for future events - hence the Molinari bet for the Race to Dubai and there is another golf one which catches my eye - in the Ryder Cup market to make the European team Anders Hansen could make a big move tomorrow - he is pretty consistent and I don't think he should be 14/1 - Skybet £70 .
I had considered looking at the Oscars and Daniel Day Lewis who has such a great "gong" record but most reviewers have said the film "Nine" should be given a zero!!
19 December 14.01
More good news on the skiing front as Manuel Osborne Paradis wins todays Downhill in Val Gordena. Lets see if I can keep the run up - tomorrows Gian Slalom from Alta Badia looks to be among the front runners but Iw ill give a small chance to Hannes Reichelt - who has won a GS before and was 3rd here last year - £15 win 40/1 William Hill and £30 podium 10/1 Bwin.
16 December 16.29
Looking through the prices for Fridays Super G from Val Gordena there is one price I just don't understand - Werner Heel 17/1 win & 4/1 podium at Bwin - he is the defending champion who also won another Super G at Are last season and was 3rd in the Super G at Val D'Isere. How he can be bigger in the SG market compared to the Downhill I simply don't know - £40 ew
15 December 10.12
I watched last weeks Alfred Dunhill scores rather annoyed at a young South African who I wanted to fly under the radar and was rather alarmed when he entered the final round in 4th place. In a way I was rather grateful Jacques Blaauw faded on Sunday as his price has held up this week for the South African Open and he would have learnt a lot from the experience. Basically he is attached to the Pearl Valley course and it was the scene of one of his great amateur triumphs when he won the South African amateur strokeplay on the course last season. He has had a very solid first year as a pro in the minor South African events but I am sure he can mix it on the bigger stage - £50 ew 150/1 and £200 on Betfair at 160 average to trade.
A quick bet for skiing - further details to follow but Mens Downhill Val Gordena - Manuel Osborne Paradis £25 win 17/1 £50 podium 4/1 Bwin.
13 December 17.43
Finally some very good news as Hirscher wins the Giant Slalom with two excellent runs - beginning to think its a shame the skiing season doesn't last all year lol!
Miss World took place yesterday and there were some very surprising results with the favourite Puerto Rico fainling to make the last 16 along with Barbados. My first tip France made it to the last seven and I really thought she had won when they announced the second and third places but 100/1 shot Gibraltar surprised all and France ended up 4th.
Tonight sees the SPOTY show and if you also backed Ennis at big odds please pick up the phone and vote for her!!
11 December 11.46
I have been keeping my eye on the skiing this week and noticed Marcel Hirscher has just finished 3rd after the first run of the Super Combined in Val D'sere. He really is a promising young skier and has been double Junior World Champion in the Giant Slalom - I have had £20 win 33/1 and £40 podium 15/2 for Sundays GS with William Hill.
Looking at the golf - glad I didn't really get involved and Drysdale was pretty poor yesterday - I really do like the look of Edouardo Molinari and think he will show his full potential this season and with Skybet offering 80/1 for the Race to Dubai I couldn't resist £40 on the win and £60 on him finishing top 10 at 14/1 - at least it will give me someone to watch in the many events I probably won't be backing in even though I hate tying up my money for a year!!

9 December 11.44
Its that time of the year when my mind turns to Christmas and rather than stuffing the turkey I start thinking - can I pay for Christmas by betting on a white one!?! Although I look every year I think I have only backed Yes twice and copped both times. AT the moment you can get pretty accurate forecasts taking us up to 23rd December and there is quite a lot of the white stuff about in the North and East so I have placed £30 on each of the following at William Hills
Edinburgh 9/2
Lincoln 8/1
Newcastle 6/1
York 8/1

7 December 19.27
Well fortunately Svindal finished 3rd last night to get the place part of the bet up - this week looks very quiet on the Skiing front with no downhill to keep an eye on so a quiet week there. As for the golf - well I had to have a look at the Dunhill - no point with Aus as it will be won by one of the favourites whereas in South Africa an upset is possible. If you were to have a bet I couldn't put you off David Drysdale at 80/1 & 16/1 top 5 - solid course form and had 4 top 5's in Euro events last season from 27 starts - even I caved in and had £30 ew and £20 top 5!!
6 December 14.50
Just a quick bet for the Gian Slalom from Beaver Creek - as I said the other day Svindal seems to be back to form and considering he has been 4/5/2/3 here in 4 attempts then 20/1 seems fairly generous at Hills £30 win and £40 podium at just over 5/1
5 December 21.06
A frustrating week to the new betting me - but at the odds I back at its hardly surprising - in Australia I really got the value BUT as most people will say - you can't eat value!! The skiing has been annoying - Defago won the downhill part of the combined yesterday and went off as low as 4/1 today but never really challenged. As for the Q schools the last 2 weeks - probably best not to talk about them and will give them a wide berth in future years.
Next week will be fairly quiet I reckon but next weekend is a big one for my year overall - with Miss World on the Saturday and SPOTY on Sunday - really annoyed about the move for Giggs and would be a trvesty if he won - but hey thats just my opinion!
3 December 19.08
Following the mens Downhill training and Defago has gone well - probably finishing 3rd so his price should contract. Interestingly Svindal seems to have shaken off his injury and the 13/1 Hills go for tomorrows Super Combined could look very big £40 for me - after all he is World Champion and won the SC at Beaver Creek before.
3 December 17.29
A quick bet for the Mens Downhill from Beaver Creek - I really don't understand quite why Defago is such a big price - winner of two World Cup Downhills last season and 4th and 6th here the last two seasons £15 win 30/1 £25 top 3 8/1 Bwin
2 December 18.53
Whilst waiting for the Downhill training runs to take place which have been delayed I looked again at last nights Ladies in Lake Louise and one thing stood out on the speed figures was Gisins performance - whilst her overall time was poor her speed was great - there could well be a lot of improvement to come and the winner of two World Cup Downhills last season shouldn't be the price she is £20 win 30/1 Bwin £25 top 3 8/1.
2 December 10.11
Quickly back to the US Q school - the player I was thinking about was Steve Wheatcroft - Florida lad who won a very small event here last season but at 40/1 I just can't pull the trigger - however in the course of further research Fabian Gomez came up. He recently finished 5th/7th in the last two Nationwide events to miss out on a card by $6000 - and last week he won in Argentina. He tees off today on the Lakes Course - a place he will have fond memories of - in 2006 he shot a course record 62 on the way to winning a big Gateway Tour event - £50 ew 50/1.
Thats it for the golf - for a "slimmed down" week I didn't expect to have 5 bets - though that might be it for a little while!! Back later today with some skiing hopefully.
1 December 12.19
OK - the reasonings behind the three for the Australian Open are fairly straightforward and date back to 2007 and the Australian Amateur which used the NSW Golf Club as its venue and the three players who shone out that week were my three picks. Andrew Dodt won the strokeplay beating Scott Arnold in a four hole playoff whilst Rohan Blizard won the matchplay format. Maybe it was no shock that Blizard and Arnold did so well as this is their home course. Arnold has had a torrid time since turning pro - shortly after he became the world leading amateur but since his return to Aus he has recaptured his form finishing 2nd and 3rd and wouldn't be a great shock to see him up there on a tough track where he honed his skills. Blizard also hasn't been that great since turning pro but was going great until the final round last week whilst Dodt has had a really solid year on the Asian tour. With the odds I managed to get just one in the top five will return a healthy profit.
The only other event that interests me this week is the PGA Q School which starts tomorrow - I am still hoping for a slightly bigger price on one player but I have gone for Jess Daley and have done the following -
£15 ew 250/1
£15 top 5 55/1
£30 top 10 25/1
£50 to get card 10/1
The reason is simple - its his home course - he has been a member for years and in 2001 when it was last used for Q school he was 13th, and he has also done well in US Open sectional qualifying here before. He had a great spring on the Gateway Tour in Florida and held his nerve really well in Stage 2 when he had to birdie the last two holes to progress
